Playtime was temporarily over for Scott and Jill as they had to get back to work on Monday morning. I had originally intended to leave the house with them, but they generously offered me the option to just "lock the door on my way out." (Thanks again, Scott and Jill, for having me as your weekend guest! It was great to see you!) This day quickly turned into an administrative day, but ended with a fun night out with Matt. I cleaned up, spent some time online, paid bills, and contacted the outfitter in Port Alberni, British Columbia, to make arrangements for my kayak rental.
By the time I finally left Scott and Jill's, it was noon and I had a few errands to run before meeting with Matt for dinner. I stopped at Wells Fargo for cash and at Supercuts for a trim in downtown Ballard. Ballard has a heavy Scandinavian influence, so I felt right at home as I drove by places like Viking Financial Consultants, Leif Erikson Hall, and the Nordic Cultural Center.
I returned downtown Seattle to visit REI for the 3rd time in 4 days in search of nautical charts and tide almanacs for the kayak trip to the Broken Islands. I struck out there, but the salewoman pointed me in the direction of Captain's Nautical Supply store located near Ballard. I found the chart, but I learned that a tide almanac probably didn't exist due to the remoteness of the Broken Islands. (A tide almanac would be very useful to identify the current strength and water levels in the areas we would be kayaking.)
Conrad got his oiled changed at the Grease Monkey in Ballard. I still had a little time before Matt and I would meet at his house. The Grease Monkey garage mechanic recommended that I visit Fremont to see the large concrete sculpture of a troll crushing a real Volkswagen bug under the Highway 99 bridge. I kept driving by it without realizing it! (Matt pointed it out to me later.) As luck would have it, Matt's house was located about a half-mile from the troll!
Matt and I decided to go for a run, then get some grub. We packed up his 5-month old, highly energetic Wheaton terrier puppy, Sprocket, and drove to Discovery Park (the same place where I had my grueling run just a couple of days before.) While the puppy ran circles around us, we chugged around the loop and down to the beach, which appeared quite different to me due to the high tide. We threw sticks into the tide and Sprocket retrieved them. We ended up at a great Indian restaurant in the upscale Queen Anne neighborhood for curried lamb, dal, naan, and a beer.
I had intended that night to head south towards Mt. Rainer, next day's destination, but as it was getting late, Matt kindly offered me his futon. (Thanks Matt and Dawn!)
